Tadǫetła ; Walk In A Circle is a series of 3D animations that re-imagine traditional Indigenous cultural materials as living and embodied characters. Drawing inspiration from his Dene roots, Casey Koyczan re-imagines antlers, beads, quills, and moose/caribou tufting in virtual realms. Each figure, created from these materials, is activated through a walk cycle, bringing their spirit to life through surreal transformations. Koyczan states, “even though the materials I am working with are digital, I am treating them with the same amount of respect as if they were physical in the real world.”

Casey Koyczan’s Godaà ; Presence is an interactive artwork that is activated by the presence of the audience. The viewer’s movements transmit information through a camera to the screen in front of them, providing a direct and immediate correlation of engagement and interactivity for each participant. Through this interactive experience, Koyczan invites the viewer to actively play with the relationship between the physical and digital through bodily movement, creating virtual drawings on the screen. The viewer participates in the formation of the work itself through the captured movement of their own body and their active presence. Often utilizing AR or VR technology in his work, Koyczan is interested in creating platforms to encourage shifts in our perceptions of reality.
Artist Biography
Casey Koyczan is a Dene interdisciplinary artist from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, currently living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received a Multimedia Production diploma from Lethbridge College in Alberta, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Thompson Rivers University, and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Koyczan’s practice encompasses sculpture, installation, and 3D/VR/AR/360 video, music and audio work, soundscapes, and film scores.
