GARY JAMES JOYNES

7 Seymour Street West

Gary James Joynes (aka Clinker) is an award-winning sound and visual artist who has been active in the international live audio-visual and experimental music performance community for years. He has more recently embarked on a broader artistic exploration using his analog synthesizers and custom made machines to create “visual-sound” as photograph/drawing/sculpture hybrids along with immersive installation environments.

His latest live cinema work Peregrination was included in the 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art. The most recent chapter in Joynes’ visual catalog presented a solo exhibition entitled Topographic Sound at Edmonton’s dc3 Art Projects in early 2013 and featured his critically acclaimed work Ouroboros which premiered at Toronto’s Koffler Centre of the Arts in September 2011.

Recent performances include New Forms 14 (Vancouver), MUTEK_IMG (Montreal), SoundsLike (Saskatoon), Koffler Centre (Toronto), Electric Fields (Ottawa), Roulette Mixology Festival (New York), Soundasaurus (Calgary), and Mutek_10 (Montreal). The last few years have seen Clinker’s sound and video work exhibited in Canada and abroad in festivals and events including Sublimated Landscape / Sonic Topology @ ICA London (London, UK), Tanzstartklar Festival 2008 (Graz, Austria), and Sprawl – Interplay_4 Festival 2007 (Amsterdam, Dublin, London, Bristol).

Peregrination, first performed at the Art Gallery of Alberta for the 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a musical journey through deep and affecting sounds coupled with video elements all controlled live from the artist’s dais. This improvisational piece transports us through turmoil and grief to a place of contemplation and suspense…

Peregrination is a live cinema work reflecting on the nature of sound and its visual and material nature. A meditation on Joynes’ visual experimentation using historical scientific instruments and anachronistic musical technology. Peregrination combines compositional sound with an improvisational use of video footage of live play of the wave driver machinery he uses to create in the studio.

For Peregrination Joynes’ brings the early phase of his career in Live Cinema together with his most recent experiments in cymatics by composing and triggering his visual sound waveform animations live in concert and accompanying these with live vocal layering and overtone singing. Like all elements in his Frequency Painting series, he connects sound and visual definitions of sound. This new work expands these senses with aspects of space and time in his most ambitious Live Cinema work to date. Joynes’ explorations and experimentations in art are focused on the active process of listening to, looking at, and feeling sound; slowing down time and linking sensoria to allow for immersion in a whole body experience.

Special thanks to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and dc3 Art Projects for supporting the creation of this work.
